Romantic Escapes: Why Quebec City is the Perfect Backdrop for Your Pre-Wedding Photoshoot
There is something undeniably magical about Quebec City. As a photographer, I’ve traveled to many destinations, but few places capture the essence of romance quite like the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of capturing a pre-wedding session here for a wonderful couple, and looking back at the gallery, I am reminded why this city is a top-tier destination for love stories.
When we arrived, the weather was crisp and the sky was a piercing blue—a photographer's dream. We started our journey near the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. It’s impossible to visit Quebec City without paying homage to this castle. Standing tall on the hill, it adds a fairytale grandeur to every frame.
To get these pristine shots, we made a strategic decision: we started our session before 8:00 AM. This is my top tip for shooting in popular destinations. By starting early, we beat the tourist crowds completely, giving us the freedom to shoot wide, cinematic angles without anyone walking into the frame. Plus, that soft, early morning light is simply unbeatable for skin tones.
We wandered down to the Dufferin Terrace, where the boardwalk stretches out with views of the St. Lawrence River. Because of our early start, the terrace was quiet and peaceful. I captured a quiet moment of the groom kissing the bride’s hand under the gazebo—simple, elegant, and full of emotion.
One of my favorite parts of shooting in Quebec City is the variety of textures and the journey between the Upper and Lower towns. As we moved away from the castle, we utilized the historic staircases and walkways that connect the city. These spots offer great leading lines and a classic architectural feel.
We then moved into the intimate, European-style alleyways of the Quartier Petit Champlain and Place Royale. The stone buildings, the colorful umbrellas hanging overhead, and the vintage storefronts provided a playful yet sophisticated atmosphere. We even had a bit of fun running across the crosswalks, capturing the couple's genuine laughter and excitement.
We wrapped up the session near the Parliament Building (Hôtel du Parlement). The architecture here is stunningly intricate. We utilized a long veil to create a dramatic, sweeping composition that framed the couple perfectly against the fountain and the changing autumn leaves. It was the perfect ending to a spectacular morning.
If you are looking for a location that offers European charm without crossing the Atlantic, Quebec City is it. Whether it's the historic architecture, the vibrant street life, or the quiet parks, every corner offers a new perspective for your love story.
